From Lloyd's Register The
Sophia, was a barque of 376 tons built in Chepstow in 1822.
(A barque is a sailing vessel with three or more masts having the foremasts
rigged square and only the aftermast rigged fore-and-aft.)
About 107' long x 23' wide she was copper bottomed in 1831 (copper sheathing was applied to the bottom of a wooden ship to prevent damage from marine
organisms) she was captained by J Barclay for at least ten years until she disappears from the Register in 1840.
Owned by Green & Co of 64 Cornshill London the Lloyd's records show she sailed from Gravesend to Jamaica on Tuesday Jan 12th 1836
